How it works

Water Baptism

“Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.” —Acts 2:38

When you are baptized in water, it symbolizes that God has washed away your guilt, shame, and all the negative things from your past. By doing this publicly, you make a bold and strong statement to the audience that you are now a believer and follower of Jesus Christ. God has forgiven you of all your sins and you have been given the gift of the Holy Spirit living inside of you! From now on, if you let the Holy Spirit lead your thoughts and actions, and you build a deep relationship with Jesus, you will have the power to live an exemplary life. You will not be perfect, but Jesus is perfect, and He will shine through you!

Scriptures on Baptism

Romans 6:3, “Or have you forgotten that when we were joined with Christ Jesus in baptism, we joined him in his death?”

Romans 6:4, “For we died and were buried with Christ by baptism. And just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glorious power of the Father, now we also may live new lives.”

Romans 6:6-7, “We know that our old sinful selves were crucified with Christ so that sin might lose its power in our lives. We are no longer slaves to sin. For when we died with Christ we were set free from the power of sin.”

1 Peter 3:21, “And that water is a picture of baptism, which now saves you, not by removing dirt from your body, but as a response to God from a clean conscience. It is effective because of the resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

Matthew 28:19, “Therefore, go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.”

John 4:1-2, “1Jesus knew the Pharisees had heard that he was baptizing and making more disciples than John 2(though Jesus himself didn’t baptize them—his disciples did).”

Acts 2:38, “Peter replied, ‘Each of you must repent of your sins and turn to God, and be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins. Then you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.’”

Acts 8:12-13, “But now the people believed Philip’s message of Good News concerning the Kingdom of God and the name of Jesus Christ. Then Simon himself believed and was baptized. He began following Philip wherever he went,

and he was amazed by the signs and great miracles Philip performed.

Acts 8:36-38, “36As they rode along, they came to some water, and the eunuch said, ‘Look! There’s some water! Why can’t I be baptized?’ 37, ‘You can,’ Philip answered, ‘if you believe with all your heart.’ And the eunuch replied, ‘I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.’ 38He ordered the carriage to stop, and they went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.”

Baptism Process

Find some water

A person may be baptized anywhere – a river, pool, bathtub, hot tub, lake or the ocean. The Bible does not limit where someone must be baptized because the power of God’s forgiveness is in Jesus and not the water.

Go into the water

If the water source is large enough (like a pool, river, or baptistry), then you may go into the water with the one being baptized. If it is too small (like a bathtub), then just kneel next to the person as he/she sits down into the water.

Take their confession of faith

Ask, “Do you believe that Jesus is the Son of God? Do you declare Jesus your Lord and Savior? And do you trust Jesus as your Savior and commit to obey Jesus as your Lord?”

What to say

Say, “I now baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” (This is what Jesus taught us to say in Matthew 28:19)

Lay the person down into the water and back up

Full immersion best represents dying to our old selves and being reborn in Jesus.
