What Must I do to be Saved?
The Philippian jailer asked Paul and Silas, “Sirs, what must I do to be saved?” (Acts 16:30). Paul and Silas responded, “Believe in the Lord Jesus, and you will be saved” (Acts 16:31). This is a question that has plagued many and yet the answer often seems to be too simple. We all want to do something and the beauty of Jesus has done for us is he did what is required.
The Bible tells us in Romans 3:23 that we are all infected with sin and yet God requires Holiness. Achieving holiness on our own is impossible. Psalm 51:5 tells us that we are born with sin, and in Ecclesiastes 7:20 as well 1 John 1:8 the Bible reminds us that we all personally choose to sin. Sin is what makes us unsaved. Just as when I break relationship with a friend or family member by offending them, we find that sin is what separates us from God. It is a horrible fact that sin is what has us on the path to eternal destruction.
But the beauty of what Jesus did is he remedied our offense with God through himself. Now, we can have relationship with Jesus, God and the Holy Spirit. So, what must we do?
1 John 1:9 tells us: "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness." Next, we must believe that Jesus is able to forgive our sins and believe upon Him as Lord. Listen to what Romans10:9-11 says:
9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. 10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. 11 As Scripture says, “Anyone who believes in him will never be put to shame.”
So here are the steps:
1. Find a quiet place to pray
2. Repent and Confess your Sins to God
3. Believe upon Jesus
4. Declare with your mouth that Jesus is Lord (Your Lord... He is everyones really)
5. Believe that Jesus is raised from the Dead and you will be saved
If you confessed your sin to the Lord, Repented, declared Jesus as Lord and believed He is raised from the dead, then you are saved and now you are my brother or sister!
